King Philip's War. The Tylers had fled Mendon after the attack of 14 July 1675 (see Job Tyler), and by November Samuel, twenty, was at Rowley. On 29 Nov 1675 Capt. Samuel Brocklebank pressed twelve men there, "only some of them are men that are but latly come to town, and want arms," "Samuel Tiller" among them (History of Rowley, pp. 181-182). They went straight into Maj. Samuel Appleton's own company, the first company of the Massachusetts regiment, and three weeks later, on 19 Dec 1675, that company stormed the Narragansett fort in the Great Swamp Fight (Soldiers in King Philip's War, pp. 155-158). Samuel was very probably there, and he came home unhurt. He was still of Rowley Village in 1682, when his brother Hope deeded him a house lot at Mendon (Brigham, 1:36), and his son Ebenezer later claimed his share of the soldiers' township at No. 3, the later Amherst, New Hampshire (Bodge p. 422).
His widow Hannah was granted administration on 9 Apr 1696; inventory £243.10.
Children (Mendon VR p. 197): Ebenezer, Apr 28, 1685; Han[n]ah, Feb 12, 1687 (Brigham says 1692); Mary, Feb 21, 1688-9; Elizabeth, Mar 17, 1691; Samuel, Feb 26, 1694-5.
The family has long said that he was wounded and left for dead at the fort; the company's clerk had written a "Samuel Taylor of Rowley" among its dead by mistake.
