- note
- John Besbeech of Biddenden's will of 28 June 1609 left a bequest to "Richard Foster and Patience his wife" (NEHGR 67:33, via WikiTree).
Of Biddenden, Kent. The administration of his estate was granted on 3 May 1630 to John Bigg, "maternal uncle of Mary, Hopestill and John Foster, children, minors"; his widow Patience renounced it.
Pane-Joyce makes him a son of Thomas Foster and Dorothy Austin, who married at Biddenden on 20 Jan 1579/80; Dorothy married (2) John Besbedge at Biddenden on 31 Oct 1586. If so, the 1609 bequest of John Besbeech to "Richard Foster and Patience his wife" came from Richard's stepfather [inferred].
When the Consistory Court of Canterbury confirmed Smallhope Bigg's will on 4 Apr 1639, it still styled his widow "Patience Bigg alias Foster, wife of Richard Foster," although Richard had died by 1630 (Waters, Gleanings 1:21).
Mollie (pp. 115-117) makes him a son of Rev. Thomas Foster of Ipswich and hangs a descent from the Foresters of Northumberland, Baldwin of Flanders, Charlemagne and Alfred the Great on that link. Rev. Thomas's son Richard was an Ipswich shipmaster alive in 1639, so they were different men.
