The woman in the family photograph. Probably placed out as household help as a girl: she is not in her father's probable 1840 household in St. Louis County, nor in Hickman Bruner's in Martin County, Indiana. Her parents' family and the Bruners came together as neighbors in Appanoose County, Iowa, in the later 1840s; there is no evidence that they knew each other in Indiana.
Married Eli Woodruff Bruner in 1850 and went with him to Daviess County, Indiana, where the census found them newlyweds, she unable to read or write. Then Martin County, where Emma was born in 1853; Illinois about 1857; Mercer County, Missouri, from about 1858, where she and Eli were founding members of the Somerset Methodist Episcopal Church that year. In 1860 everyone on the Mercer County page, she and the children included, was recorded as white. The master tree calls her the mother of eleven; ten are named.
Widowed in 1879, when Eli died at Colorado City, Colorado. In 1880 she headed her own household in Hico Township, Benton County, Arkansas, with Albert, James and Georgia Ann, and gave both her parents' birthplaces as Virginia. Her daughter Emma married in the same county in 1881 and was living in Siloam Springs when Mary Elizabeth died there in 1887.
Open questions
- A record that names her parents: the 1850 Appanoose County marriage record, if it survives, might.
- Her death record and grave in Siloam Springs.
- The Molata addendum says she was "marked M" in 1850; the research's reading of the 1850 Daviess County entry doesn't give her color. Check the image.
