- He was "Jonathan Jr., of the Elbows," so an older Jonathan Chapin was his father or namesake. The Chapin Book's "best guess" is Jonathan, son of David and Lydia (Crump) Chapin, b. 12 Feb 1665 at Boston, and WikiTree follows it; the book itself says "absolute proof is impossible."

Father of Lt. Jonathan Chapin, and one of the first settlers of the Elbow tract, which became the town of Palmer: Temple's History of Palmer begins its Chapin family "came from Springfield. Jonathan and Mina [Anna] Chapin; he b. 1710, d. July 3, 1780; she b. 1715, d. May 27, 1770" (source), and the proprietors' grants confirm to "Jonathan Chapin, Jun." a hundred-acre lot, "Forty-two acres as already laid out to him, including his Improvements." The Chapin Book has him "of Kingsfield or Kingston. Brimfield, Palmer (Elbows) Before June 21, 1733," and says a Jonathan Chapin of King's Field "was concerned in the Land Bank Scheme of 1740" (source).
On 10 Dec 1736 he married Anna, eldest child of Capt. Ebenezer Hitchcock of Springfield, "Jonathan Chapin of the Elbows" in the Hitchcock genealogy (source). Their children were Anne (1737-1756), Jonathan (b. 22 Oct 1738), Luke (1740-1776, died in the army at Mount Independence), Gideon (1742), Joseph (1744), Abner (1746), Gad (bp. 1748), Chloe (bp. 1751) and Shadrack (1753) (source). Anna died in May 1770, and on 2 May 1771 he married the widow Bertha Parsons. He died at Monson on 3 July 1780, aged 69.

Open questions
- Who were his parents? The Chapin Book gives the marriage of Jonathan Chapin and Elizabeth Burt (20 Apr 1710) and the birth of their son Jonathan (8 July 1711) twice: under Japhet Chapin's son Jonathan of Springfield (entry 1-1-10), whose son of that birth "d. Nov. 12, 1768, age 58, Old Chicopee Cem." (entry 1-1-10-1), and again under a Jonathan, son of David and Lydia (Crump) Chapin, b. 1665 (entry 1-4-6), whom G. W. Chapin chose for this man "by a process of elimination ... our best guess, but absolute proof is impossible." Both entries cannot be right. WikiTree keeps the father from David's line and drops Elizabeth Burt. Both parents are left as names here, at possible; the research report rated this step probable (Link G) without the duplicate entry. The Palmer, Brimfield and Springfield records and the Land Bank papers of 1740 are the places to look.
- The Chapin Book adds an older generation through David Chapin (Link H, possible). The family descends from Deacon Samuel Chapin in any case, through Abigail Munn.
