Wife of Maj. James Converse. Hannah was born at Woburn on 19 Jan 1651, probably the daughter of Capt. John Carter, and married James Converse there on 1 Jan 1668/9 (source). She bore him nine children at Woburn between 1670 and 1688, among them John (1673), Robert (1677) and Josiah (1684); two of the boys died as children, and her daughters Elizabeth and Patience at 19 and 21 (source). Her husband was the captain at Storer's garrison in 1692 and later Speaker of the House.
King Philip's War. Her father, Capt. John Carter, commanded the Woburn company when the war opened: "WOBURN. John Carter. [Capt.] William Johnson. [Lieut.] James Converse. [Ensign]" (Soldiers in King Philip's War, p. 474). His name heads Woburn's return for the Narragansett levy of late 1675, followed by Lt. William Johnson and James Converse, probably her father-in-law; the three officers very probably pressed the town's men rather than marched themselves (p. 172; see James Converse). Her husband was then probably the town's sergeant.
