- note
- No record names her father. She married Jesse Collins's brother two years after her probable sister Mary married Jesse, and she and Hiram are counted beside or near James in 1830 and 1840.
Probably Mary Reed's sister. Married Hiram Collins, Jesse's brother, 8 Dec 1829 in Clay County, Kentucky (recorded on his page; a first license of 1 Dec 1828 lapsed). In 1830, on the Clay County page where James Reid is two lines below, she and Hiram are entered in the slave columns (she as a woman aged 10-24) and their small son in the white column. In 1840 Hiram heads a free colored household of seven in Morgan County, Indiana, on the page after James Reed's: 2 boys under 10, a young man 10-24, a man 24-36, 2 girls under 10 and a woman 24-36. Her niece Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Collins was probably named for her mother Mary and her aunt Elizabeth.
She is not among the children in JoEllen Reed's notes on the Morgan County James, but those come from his will and deeds, which deal with land given to sons.
Open questions
- A James Read consent in either of the Hiram-Elizabeth marriage files (1828 or 1829) would document her as James's daughter.
- Is she the Elizabeth, 39, born Indiana, with a Hiram Collins, 46, in Knox County, Indiana, in 1850? The origin-line addendum logs that entry with a caution: there were several Hirams, and it sits uneasily with the Reed marriage and the 1840 household.
- Her daughters' female lines are the route to a Reed mtDNA test.
