Adam Bruner was born in Maryland in 1763, a son of Michael Bruner, whose father Jacob had come from Germany to Frederick County. He enlisted at Philadelphia on 4 Feb 1781, a private in Capt. John Gayer's company of the Third regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, and served four years; his brothers Peter and Leonard served too. After the war the family went to Franklin County, Virginia, and on to Jefferson County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Rice at Louisville in 1785, and the next year the family went on down the Ohio to the wilderness of Breckenridge County, where he raised six sons and a daughter and where his father died in 1814.
In 1825 the family crossed the Ohio into Orange and Lawrence counties, Indiana. His son Michael went on to Knox County, Illinois, in 1830 and, in 1840 or 1842, brought his parents out from Indiana to his farm near Rio. Elizabeth died there in 1842, and Adam on 19 Oct 1846. They lie in the Bruner family plot near Rio, where in 1915 a granite monument with a cannon on top was raised to Adam and his brother Peter, "soldiers of the Revolutionary war" (Illinois Revolutionary War Veteran Burials, 1917; "The Bruner Tradition," 1977).
The Bruner research names him as the father of Henry Hickman Bruner, who was in his household in Breckenridge County in 1810 and married in Lawrence County, Indiana, in 1824.
Open questions
- A record naming Hickman as his son: the family account names only Michael of the six sons.
- His pension or service record, and the Breckenridge County and Indiana land and tax records.
