Notes
His father’s will (1571/2) left him £5 and remainders to the Compton Dando holdings. Probably the son John who was his mother Edith’s residuary legatee and executor in 1592.
Davis (1945), writing before William’s 1617 deposition was known, guessed his birth at about 1540 and made him the father of William of Glastonbury; with William born about 1551-2 that no longer fits.
Open questions
- Davis thought it possible that he lived at Glastonbury and that the Edith buried there on 11 June 1612 was his wife, not William’s. Unresolved.
- Was he the “John Holbrooke my brother deceased” of Robert’s will (1616/17), or was that John the elder?
