About it

Whale ships and their boats among the right whales and bowheads of the far North Pacific, drawn by a whaling captain who knew the grounds. The Globe hunted these waters from 1846 to 1849, the “N.W. Coast” of the whalemen, which by then reached from the Gulf of Alaska to Kamchatka. Scammon wrote of “dismal fogs” and “standing mast-heads in the biting cold.”
