About it

Lahaina from the roads, with the mountains of West Maui behind the town and whale ships at anchor: the royal town of Kamehameha III until 1845 and the great port of the American whaling fleet in the Pacific. The Hydaspe put in here in 1842 and 1844, and the Globe between her northern seasons; it was here, on 18 Jan 1850, that the Globe’s crew asked to see the consul. Jones, who came in about 1853, “found about seventy sail at anchor, about sixty-five of them American whalemen.”
