About it
Three pages of the abstract of the Hydaspe’s log made for Lieutenant Matthew Fontaine Maury’s charts of winds and currents, the voyage Richard B. Holbrook sailed on. The first is the volume’s index, which lays out her whole route: from 30° south in the Atlantic to Geographe Bay, Western Australia (sailed 24 Sept 1841, arrived 26 Nov); to Ascension, now Pohnpei, in the Carolines (7 May 1842); to “Mowee” (Maui, 21 Oct 1842); to “Otaheita” (Tahiti, 24 June 1843); back to Ascension (24 Nov 1843); to “Opolo, Navigators” (Upolu, Samoa, 31 Mar 1844); from 36° north in the Pacific to Lahaina (22 Oct 1844); and from Lahaina round Cape Horn to 30° south in the Atlantic (22 Feb 1845): “Whole No. 1088 days.” The second page opens the daily log, on the passage to Geographe Bay in 1841; the third is its last, the passage home from Lahaina in 1845.
