The crew list of the Globe, ship, 479 tons, of New Bedford, John C. Daggett master, George Hussey agent, dated 12 Sept 1845, as the American Offshore Whaling Crew Lists database has it: "Richard B. Holbrooks," of Plymouth, age 24, complexion light, hair brown; no rank is given. On the same list: "John Alexander," of Plymouth, 25 (not the Penn Cove settler of that name, born in Ireland about 1805). Read 13 Oct 2026 in the database download.
The voyage: sailed 13 Sept 1845 for the Pacific, ground "N. W. Coast" (the right-whale grounds of the North Pacific); returned 22 Aug 1850 with 76 barrels of sperm oil and 4,394 of whale oil (Starbuck, History of the American Whale Fishery, 1878, pp. 422-423), and 17,200 lbs of bone, having "sent home 13,411 pounds bone" during the voyage (Starbuck; the voyages database has 48,200 lbs). Starbuck adds that she was "Bought from Philadelphia 1845." The Honolulu Polynesian, as found in the Library of Congress's newspaper text (the page images not checked), has her at Lahaina: "Am ship Globe, Daggett, New Bedford, 13 months, 50 sperm, 1300 whale, 1300 whale this season" (31 Oct 1846), and again, 18 months out, on 18 Feb 1847. A crewman's account kept in the back of a journal of the voyage has money received "in Port of Guam" and "in HongKong" in 1849 (Journal kept on board the ship Globe of New Bedford, on her passage from the Sandwich Islands to the United States, 1850). The Republican Herald of Providence, 28 Aug 1850 (the same, not checked): "Ar at New Bedford, 22d, ship Globe, Daggett, North Pacific, 4500 bbls wh 100 do sp." She was lost in the Bering Strait on her next voyage, on 10 Aug 1851.
His age fits Richard Blackmer Holbrook of Plymouth, who was 24 from August 1845; five days after the Globe came in, the census taken at Plymouth on 27 Aug 1850 has "Richard Holbrook, 27, Seaman."
