A screenshot of the photograph on Find a Grave, 10 Oct 2026 (photo 164904706, added by "Gone But Not Forgotten"). A small round-headed marble stone, broken across and leaning against a darker stone, its lettering worn and lichened:

IN MEMORY OF / [JOHN SHORT?] / ... / [WHO] DIED / AT ORONO C. W. [?] / OCT 4TH 1858 / AGED 50 YEARS / [NATIVE OF?] ... / [ENGLAND?] ...

The name lines above the break cannot be read in the screenshot; the memorial's transcription gives only "Age: 50 years." The place, date and age match John Short's family stone at Woodstock (Gravestone of John Short (1808-1858), Mary (Jeffrey) Short and their daughter Jane).

What it shows:

  • John Short is buried at Orono, in Lawrence Cemetery, under a stone put up near the time of his death. The tall stone at Woodstock, put up after 1909, is a memorial to him with his wife and daughter (the Find a Grave memorial notes "Cenotaph here").
  • Aged 50 in October 1858 fits his birth in August 1808.
