A Rhode Island history of the Narragansett country, printing the deeds, mortgages, royal letters and commissioners' reports on the Atherton purchases. Read in the archive.org full text.
Cited for King Philip's War (research/king-philips-war/), for Humphrey Atherton's Narragansett
purchases, which the Rhode Island deputy governor John Easton called "the greatest Case of the war":
- The deeds from Coginaquand for Quidnesett and Namcook, 11 June and 4 July 1659 (pp. 58, 235). Roger Williams refused Atherton's offers of land to interpret for him (p. 59).
- The sachems' mortgage of 30 Oct 1660 of their unsold lands "to Atherthon & Co.," who paid the Commissioners' fine; possession delivered in the spring of 1662 (p. 61), "by turf and twig" to Hutchinson, Hudson and Smith "in behalf of ... Major Atherton and partners" (p. 235).
- The King's letter of 1663 naming the proprietors "in the right of Major Atherton" (pp. 65-66).
- The royal commissioners' order of 20 Mar 1664/5 declaring the purchase "void" (pp. 179-181), and the commission report of 1683 upholding the proprietors (pp. 233-236). Nothing here bears out the statement that the claim was "held illegal in 1688."
- Atherton paid by the Commissioners "for keeping courts amongst the Indians in diuers places and Instructing them in theire ciuell conversation" (p. 59 n., from PCR 10:205).
