Patricia Hatten through Sarah Edith Allee: Allee, Sawdy, Soule, Sargent
Research report, 8 October 2026. Read-only: nothing in the repository was changed. Archive pages
checked: Sarah Edith Allee, Albert E. Allee, Lucinda Sargent, william-allee-1797,
Sybil Sawdy (and the Allee sibling pages), and research/gedcom/report-dwyer-hatten.md
with the GEDCOM it describes.
Tiers: [D] documented (record or a record's abstract), [C] compiled (genealogy or online tree), [I] inferred, [T] tradition. Ratings: proven / probable / possible / disproven.
READ THIS FIRST: what everything below depends on
Every famous cousin and every notable ancestor above Sybil Sawdy depends on doubtful links.
- Sarah Edith Allee → Albert Allee (possible). Only the Ancestry tree makes Sarah Edith (Mrs. Thomas J. Hatten) Albert's daughter. No record seen here names her as his child. Everything in this report hangs on this link, the bear-shooting Sybil included.
- Sybil Sawdy → Sarah (Soule) Sawdy (possible). Jacob Soule's 1807 will names a daughter "Sarah Sawdey". But no record seen names Sybil's parents. The Mayflower Society's own fifth-and-sixth-generation volume marries Jacob's daughter Sarah to a William Sawdey (1789), not to Silas, and does not list a Sybil. The Soule claim, the Mayflower descent and every cousin through Soule, Holmes and Borden depend on this link.
- William⁴ Soule → Sylvanus³ Soule (probable). The Society accepts it, but by inference: "it is likely that the children listed below are the children of Sylvanus Soule". All the famous kin also depend on this link.
Safe from links 2 and 3 (but still dependent on link 1): Sybil (Sawdy) Allee shooting the bear, Walter Allee, and Albert Allee's own story.
The archive's "William Buford Allee" is the wrong man. Sybil Sawdy's husband was Walter Allee (c. 1796 – 1866, Lenox/Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., Ohio). The archive's dates (b. 30 Mar 1797, d. 25 Sep 1874, California, Moniteau Co., Missouri) and the parents "Rev. David Allee and Charity Delila Bybee" belong to a different man, William Buford Allee of Barren Co., Kentucky, and Missouri. That makes Rev. David Allee Unrelated.
The Soule claim runs through Sawdy, not Sargent. It comes through Sybil Sawdy's mother. Lucinda Sargent's parents were not found.

Link A. Sarah Edith Allee → Albert E. Allee and Lucinda Sargent: possible
- [C] Ancestry tree only (archive pages as imported). No record is attached.
- [C] The places fit. Albert and Lucinda were in Illinois in the 1850s and 1860s; a family story on WikiTree puts their daughter Elsie's birth (1865) on a homestead at Momence/Yellowhead, Kankakee Co., Illinois (WikiTree Allee-401). They were in Todd Co., Minnesota, by the late 1860s; Fuller lists "Albert and Dan Allee" among the settlers west of Long Prairie (below). Sarah's son Ralph Hatten was born at Red Wing, Minnesota, in 1872.
- [C] WikiTree's Albert (Allee-486) lists only one child, Louis Eugene Allee (b. 10 Nov 1870, Long Prairie). Other children named in WikiTree stories are Emery Delos (1855–1951), Elsie Miranda (1865–1950) and a "Mrs. A. Partlow" of Selah. Sarah Edith is not named anywhere outside the Ancestry tree.
- Conflicts with the archive: the birthplace reads "Chicago, Cork, Illinois", a typo for Cook.
- What would settle it:
- the 1860 census of Albert's household (Kankakee Co., Ill.?) or the 1870 one (Minnesota);
- the marriage of Thomas J. Hatten and Sarah Allee (Minnesota, c. 1871);
- Sarah (Allee) Hatten's 1912 Cook County death record (her parents);
- Ralph A. Hatten's 1934 Washington death certificate (his mother's maiden name).
Link B. Albert → Walter Allee and Sybil Sawdy (the archive says William Buford Allee): probable, and the archive's father is disproven
Evidence that Sybil's husband was Walter:
[C, published reminiscence] Wickham, Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve (Cleveland, 1896), pt. 1, Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., p. 48 (archive.org):
"Sybill Sawdy, who came to Jefferson from Springfield, Pa., at an early day, was the wife of Walter Allee, who built the first house on the Bunnell farm. She has the distinction of being the only woman in Jefferson who ever shot a bear."
[D, index cited on WikiTree, not seen here] FamilySearch indexes the household:
- 1850, Lenox, Ashtabula, Ohio: Walter Allee, with "Cybil Allee" (ark 1:1:MXS5-ZZT and MXS5-ZZY);
- 1860: Walter Allee, with Sybil (ark 1:1:MCP9-1T7 and MCP9-1TW);
- 1840, Jefferson, Ohio: Walter Allee (ark 1:1:XHY8-7G3);
- 1830, Hopewell, Ontario Co., N.Y.: "Walter Alley" (ark 1:1:XHG1-T8S).
These are cited on WikiTree Allee-401 and Sawdy-86. The archive's 1860 United States Federal Census: Allee, Sawdy is the same 1860 Lenox household (Roll M653_932, p. 115). The tree attached it to "William Buford Allee", but FamilySearch indexes the head as Walter.
Evidence that Albert was their son:
- [D, unseen family document] WikiTree describes a letter Walter wrote after Sybil died (2 Sep 1862) "to his sons Daniel and Albert … in Momence, Illinois".
- [C] Fuller, History of Morrison and Todd Counties, Minnesota (1915), vol. 1, p. 225, names "Albert and Dan Allee" together among the settlers up the river west of Long Prairie (archive.org). Daniel (b. 1825, Scipio) is on the archive as Albert's brother.
- [I] Albert's daughter Elsie Miranda echoes his sister Miranda.
The man the archive has:
- [C] WikiTree Allee-23: William (Buford) Allee, b. 30 Mar 1797, Barren Co., Kentucky, d. 25 Sep 1874, California, Moniteau Co., Missouri. These are exactly the archive's dates, but with a Kentucky birth. His wives were Anna Rowland (m. 24 Dec 1820, Barren Co., Ky.) and Nancy E. (Wood) Coffman (m. 1854, Moniteau Co.).
- The GEDCOM's David Allee family also married in Franklin Co., Virginia (1786). This is the Southern family the archive already set aside for the Missouri children. The tree merged the two men.
Conflicts with the archive:
william-allee-1797should be Walter Allee:- born c. 1796, New York;
- died 1866, Lenox/Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., Ohio;
- buried East Lenox Cemetery (Find a Grave 97021734, as cited on WikiTree).
- The "Scipio" birthplace has no support. Scipio is where Sybil lived and where her son Daniel was born.
- Its father and mother ("David Allee", "Charity Delila Bybee") are Unrelated and should come off.
- Marriage: the archive has "c. 1819"; WikiTree has "about 1817/1818". No record seen.
emery-allee-1840is a merge. Emery Delos Allee (1855–1951) was Albert's son, Sarah Edith's brother. WikiTree cites his interview in the Duluth News Tribune, April 1950: "95 Today, He Recalls Raid by James Gang in Northfield". That settles the page's open question about a 111-year life. The 1840 Ohio birth belongs to no one known here.- WikiTree has a son Benjamin Franklin Allee (1835–1864, died a soldier in Dakota Territory). The archive has "Franklin Allee, c. 1831". It is probably the same man, but check.
Walter's own parents are unknown.
- [C, hypothesis] A WikiTree contributor suggests William Allee and Sarah of New Rochelle, descended from the Huguenot Jean Allé.
- That is unproven: see §5.
Link C. Sybil Sawdy → Silas Sawdy (b. 1766) and Sarah: possible
- [C] Wickham (above) gives her maiden name, Sawdy.
- [C] WikiTree places her among the children of Silas Sawdy
(Sawdy-16):
- David (1785);
- Deborah (b. 11 Mar 1787; d. 1872, Springfield, Erie Co., Pa.);
- Stephen (1790);
- Henry (1791–1881, Oakfield, N.Y.);
- Jabez (1794–1861);
- Sybil (1796);
- Clarissa (b. 1798, Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., N.Y.; d. 1837, Springfield, Pa.);
- Jonathan (1800);
- Sarah Ann (b. 1801, Cobleskill).
- [C] Records of the cluster:
- The Nash Family (1853), entry 1014-II: Alpheus Nash "m. 29 Sep. 1802, Deborah Sawdy of Hamilton" (archive.org).
- Biographical Review of Calhoun County, Michigan (1904), pp. 105–106: Jabez Sawdy "was a resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, where he followed the carpenter's trade" (archive.org).
- [I] Walter and Sybil moved about 1836 to Springfield, Erie Co., Pennsylvania, where these Sawdys lived. Sybil named a son Silas (1830). She was in Scipio, where Silas died in 1810, before she married.
- No record seen names Sybil's parents.
- Conflicts with the archive: the archive puts Silas's birth and death at Tiverton ("1766 – 1810, Tiverton"). The GEDCOM and WikiTree have him dying at Scipio, Cayuga Co., N.Y.
- What would settle it:
- Jane Fletcher Fiske, "The Sawdy Family of Boston, Rhode Island, and Points West", NEHGR 148 (April 1994): 141–160, and its continuation (WikiTree cites 148:156 and 148:268). This is the authoritative account of Silas's family.
- The 1800 census (Hamilton, then Chenango Co.) and the 1810 census (Scipio) for Silas Sawdy.
Silas's own parents, for completeness:
- [C] William Sawdy (1743–1793) and Sarah Sherman (1749–1793), per WikiTree.
- [C] WikiTree says Benjamin Sawdy's will (Tiverton probate) names William's children, Silas among them.
- This side (Sherman, Thurston, Brownell, Manchester, Cooke, and Borden again via Mary (Borden) Cooke) was not tested and is not used below.
Link D. Sybil's mother Sarah = Sarah Soule, daughter of Jacob Soule and Meribah Lewis: possible
For the identification:
[D, abstract] Jacob Soule's will, dated 31 Jan 1807 and proved 5 June 1822 (Schoharie Co., N.Y.), as abstracted in GSMD, George Soule of the Mayflower and His Descendants in the Fifth and Sixth Generations (Plymouth, 2003) (archive.org, lending only; text read through full-text search). It names:
"wife Meribah and son Lewis; sons Silas and Jacob jr.; daughters Phebe Sowle, Sarah Sawdey, Rebecca and Betsey Simmons, Massah Frazee, Abigail Anthony, Nancy Rogers and Meribah Pooler; son-in-law Eliphalet Frazee; son Lewis was executor"
[C] Ridlon, Sole, Solly, Soule, Sowle, Soulis (1926), vol. 2, p. 838, prints the legacy as "3. Sarah Sowle, wife of Gawdy, $5.00", which is evidently a misreading of Sawdy (archive.org).
[I] The family moved into Schoharie County together. Ridlon says Jacob moved "about 1798-1800" to Blenheim, Schoharie Co. WikiTree has Silas Sawdy's daughters Clarissa (1798) and Sarah Ann (1801) born at Cobleskill, in the same county.
Against, or unresolved:
[C] The GSMD volume (2003) gives Jacob's daughter as:
"i SARAH b. Tiverton RI ca 1768 [22]; d. Tiverton RI/PA? after 9 June 1793 [23]; m. Tiverton RI 19 Jan 1789 William SAWDEY/Benjamin [24] ch: Susannah (ca 1789), Silas (ca 1790), Richard (ca 1791), Henry (ca 1793 RI d 1880+ NY), Joseph (ca 1795), Peleg…"
Its note [23] reads "bap. ca 9 June 1793 Sarah, wife of William SAWDEY [PBJ p. 291]", that is, Peleg Burroughs's journal.
[I] Two things suggest the GSMD compilers mixed up two couples:
- Their child list matches the children of William Sawdy and Sarah Sherman named in Benjamin Sawdy's will (Silas, Henry, Joseph, Peleg, Susannah…).
- WikiTree has Sarah (Sherman) Sawdy dying 16 June 1793, a week after the June 1793 baptism of "Sarah, wife of William Sawdey".
But the GSMD's footnote [24], the record of the 19 Jan 1789 marriage, was not reached. The Ancestry tree has Silas Sawdy marrying Sarah Soule on 19 Feb 1789 at Tiverton. That is nearly the same date, which suggests a single record read two ways.
[D, transcript] Arnold's Vital Record of Rhode Island, vol. 4, Tiverton, has no Sawdy–Sowle marriage (archive.org). Silas Sawdy is not a head of household in the 1790 Rhode Island census (archive.org).
[D, transcript] Vital Records of Westport, Mass., p. 216: "SAWDY, Sarah of Tiverton and William Wood, Nov. 28, 1804" (archive.org). This is an unidentified Sarah Sawdy. She could fit the GSMD's William Sawdey scenario; she cannot be Silas's wife if Silas lived to 1810.
Conflicts with the archive:
- Sarah Soule's death, "10 Aug 1801, Tiverton", conflicts with three things:
- her father's 1807 will naming her;
- Sarah Ann's 1801 birth at Cobleskill;
- the tree's own attachment of the 1810 Scipio census (roll 31, p. 1234) to her.
- GSMD estimates her birth at c. 1768 (the archive has 1767).
What would settle it:
- Fiske, NEHGR 148, on Silas's wife;
- the 1789 Tiverton marriage record (the GSMD's source [24]), probably Tiverton town records or Peleg Burroughs's journal (ed. R. W. Sherman, 1981);
- the original Schoharie County will file of Jacob Soule.
Link E. Jacob Soule → William⁴ Soule (mother Keziah Gifford, or Jemima Baker): probable
[D, transcript] Arnold, VR RI 4, Tiverton Intentions and Marriages, p. 49 (Tiverton record 2-53):
"Jacob, of Tiverton, and Meribah Lewis, of Barnstable; m. by Joseph Stafford, Justice, Oct. 15, 1766."
Ridlon's "Oct. 15, 1763" is wrong.
[C] Louise Walsh Throop, the GSMD researcher for the Soule silver books, "The Descendants of Granny Sowle, widow of William Soule/Sowle", Mayflower Quarterly 86:3 (Fall 2019), pp. 38–39 (archive.org):
"Granny Sowle was Keziah (Gifford) Sowle, apparently widowed in 1778, and the second wife of William⁴ Soule (Sylvanus³, Nathaniel², George¹)…"
Her list of children opens "1. Jacob⁵ Soule, b. ca1745, m. Tiverton 1766, Meribah Lewis" and includes "7. Job Soule, b. 27 August 1757".
[C] Ridlon 2:838: "Jacob Soule (1), son of William (1) and Jemima (Baker) Soule … He also mentions his brother, Job Soule, the miller of Tiverton." The brother named in the will ties Jacob to William's family.
[C] GSMD, George Soule … for Four Generations (2006 ed.), family of William⁴ (archive.org): he married
- (1) at Swansea, 20 Sept 1733, JEMIMA BAKER, b. 1714, d. Tiverton ca. 1737;
- (2) "prob. ca. 1744 (before 24 April 1747)", KEZIAH GIFFORD, b. Dartmouth 27 Feb 1720.
His estate inventory is dated 6 Sept 1778.
If Jacob was born c. 1745, he was Keziah's son (Throop). Ridlon's Jemima is less likely.
Conflicts:
- the archive/tree have Jacob born 1743;
- the DAR Patriot Index has him "b c 1733 RI d 6-5-1822 NY m Meribah Lewis Ens RI". Its death date equals the probate date in Ridlon.
Link F. William⁴ → Sylvanus³ Soule and Sarah Slade: probable (inferred by GSMD)
[C/I] GSMD four generations (2006):
"it is likely that the children listed below are the children of Sylvanus Soule. Sylvanus Soule lived in Tiverton by 1729 and William Soule (Family #120) was in Tiverton by 1730. These are the only Soule families…"
No deed or will found naming William as Sylvanus's son.
Link G. Sylvanus³ → Nathaniel² Soule: proven
- [D, abstract] GSMD (2006): "On 4 May 1708 Nathaniel, Sylvanus and Jacob Soul sons of Nathaniel Soul late of Dartmouth…" (a Bristol Co. deed).
- Nathaniel's wife was Rose; her surname is given variously as Thorne or Hallett. It is unresolved and does not affect the line.
Link H. Sarah Slade (wife of Sylvanus) → William Slade and Sarah Holmes: proven
- [D, abstract] GSMD (2006): Sylvanus "m. prob. Swansea before 26 Oct. 1709 SARAH SLEAD/SLADE, b. Swansea 1 June 1687 … daughter of William and Sarah (Holmes) Slade". It cites "The will of William 'Slead' of Swansea dated 16 March 1729" and a deed of 25 Oct 1709.
- [D, abstract] Capt. Jonathan Holmes's will (made 1705, proved 2 Nov 1713) leaves "to his daughter Sarah Slade fifteen pounds". Source: J. T. Holmes, The American Family of Rev. Obadiah Holmes (1915), pp. 98–99 (archive.org).
Link I. Jonathan Holmes → Rev. Obadiah Holmes and Catherine; his wife Sarah → Richard and Joan Borden: proven
[C] Lea and Hutchinson, The Ancestry of Abraham Lincoln (1909), p. 97 (archive.org), lists the children of Obadiah and Catherine Holmes. Among them:
"VI. Jonathan, married Sarah, daughter of Richard and Joan ( ) Borden (born May, 1644, died 1705)… Speaker, 1696-98, 1700-03."
[D, abstract] Richard Borden's will: "To daughter Sarah Holmes, £40". Source: Weld, Descendants of Richard and Joan Borden (1899), pp. 40–43; see also p. 56: "SARAH, born May, 1644 … married Jonathan Holmes, son of Obediah and Catherine Holmes" (archive.org).
Link J. Nathaniel² → George¹ Soule: proven (accepted by GSMD)
- [D] In 1667/8, Nathaniel's sureties for good behaviour were "Gorge Soule, Senior" (£10) and "John Soule" (£10). Source: Shurtleff, ed., Records of the Colony of New Plymouth 4:179 (archive.org).
Lucinda Sargent's parents: not found
- WikiTree Sargent-5076 gives no parents. It cites Find a Grave 24511794 (Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie).
- Nothing was found in the archive.org full text, Chronicling America or web searches.
- She was born 9 Dec 1829, Fountain Co., Indiana (the county was organised in 1826).
- Leads:
- Sargent households in Fountain Co., 1830 census;
- Albert and Lucinda's marriage, probably in Illinois c. 1853 (Illinois Statewide Marriage Index; the site refused connections from here);
- the 1880 census of Lucinda, which gives her parents' birthplaces.
- No Soule or Mayflower claim runs through her.
2. Notable-ancestor material
Sybil (Sawdy) Allee (1796–1862), the woman who shot a bear: 3rd great-grandmother
Depends on links A and B.
Born in New York in 1796. She married Walter Allee about 1817–19.
They lived in Cayuga and Ontario counties, New York; then about 1836 in Springfield, Erie Co., Pennsylvania; then from about 1838 in Jefferson and Lenox, Ashtabula Co., Ohio.
Ninety-four years after their move, the women of the Western Reserve remembered her:
"Sybill Sawdy, who came to Jefferson from Springfield, Pa., at an early day, was the wife of Walter Allee, who built the first house on the Bunnell farm. She has the distinction of being the only woman in Jefferson who ever shot a bear."
Wickham, Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve (1896), pt. 1, p. 48 (archive.org).
She and Walter both caught typhoid in September 1862; she died on 2 September.
Walter wrote to their sons Daniel and Albert, then soldiers at Momence, Illinois. His handwriting is described as "neat, his phrasing gentle and educated" (WikiTree Allee-401, describing a family-held letter; not seen).
Albert E. Allee (1827–1922): 2nd great-grandfather
Depends on link A.
Born at Dansville, N.Y. He served in the Union army. A WikiTree contributor says he was discharged 16 June 1862 after a long illness; the regiment is not identified.
He then homesteaded on the Long Prairie River in Todd Co., Minnesota (Fuller, 1915, 1:225).
In 1876 he was one of the five men elected "to take charge of the estate and property of the Methodist Episcopal church at Long Prairie under the corporate name of the St. Peter's Methodist Episcopal church of Long Prairie" (Fuller 1:255).
At about 94 he travelled alone from Park Rapids, Minnesota, to his daughter at Selah, Washington, where he died in February 1922. WikiTree transcribes the Yakima Valley Optimist (1921). The newspaper was not seen, so treat this as secondhand:
"Mr. Allee enjoyed the trip in fine form despite the fact that he decided the price asked for a sleeper from his home town to Yakima was entirely too much and he occupied the day coach the entire distance. Mr. Allee though 95 his next birthday has more the appearance of a man 65 and is a member of the GAR…"
Close-family story: his son Emery Delos Allee (1855–1951), Sarah Edith's brother, told the Duluth News Tribune in April 1950 that he was in Northfield during the James–Younger raid of 1876 and was deputised to guard the body of the outlaw Bill Stiles (WikiTree; not seen).
Jacob Soule (c. 1745–1822), whaler and Revolutionary ensign: 5th great-grandfather
Depends on links A, C and D.
Ridlon 2:838:
"He was for many years a seaman, sailed to the far North engaged in the whale fishery and endured many hardships, from the rigors of the climate and the strenuous life. He served in the Navy during the Revolution, but later in life he followed the tide of emigration … and settled with his family and brothers in Blenheim, Schoharie County, N. Y., now South Gilboa…"
The GSMD volume (2003) records him as an ensign 1776–1778, and on the 1774, 1777 and 1782 Tiverton lists.
Family tradition [T], from Ridlon: "It is said that he predicted his death many weeks before the event and passed away the very day and hour as stated, in the old 'Gate House'."
Ridlon adds that "the site of the old Gate House may still be seen at the roadside where a heap of stones mark the spot."
Keziah (Gifford) Soule, "Granny Sowle", midwife of Tiverton: 6th great-grandmother
Probable mother of Jacob; depends on links A, C, D and E.
Throop, Mayflower Quarterly 86:3 (2019), p. 38, from the journal of the Baptist minister Peleg Burroughs:
"Five of his ten children were brought into this world with the assistance of Granny Sowle, beginning with Hannah (b. 25 July 1778) and ending with Phebe (b. 14 March 1788)… It appears she supported herself by midwifery for ten years of widowhood."
She was born at Dartmouth on 27 Feb 1720.
Nathaniel Soule (d. bef. 12 Oct 1699), the Pilgrim's unruly son: 8th great-grandfather
Depends on links A, C, D, E and F. From the Plymouth Colony court:
5 March 1667/8 (Shurtleff, Records of the Colony of New Plymouth 4:178–179). Summoned "to answare for his abusing of M^r John Holmes, teacher of the church of Christ att Duxburrow, by many false, scandulous, and opprobriouse speeches". He was sentenced to public acknowledgment, sureties, and "to be sett in the stockes duering the pleasure of the Court". The stocks were remitted "att the earnest request of the said M^r Holmes".
His signed confession admits "wickedly speaking, and with an high hand contumeliously villifying and scandulising M^r John Holmes" and hopes "this may be a warning to mee whiles I liue to take heed that I noe more soe falsely & wickedly speake". His father "Gorge Soule, Senior" stood surety.
1671 (Shurtleff 5:61): "Nathaniel Soule, being detected of telling seuerall lyes which tended greatly to the hurt of the collonie in reference to some particulars about the Indians, was centanced by the Court to pay a fine of fiue pound or to be publickly whipt."
1674/5 (Shurtleff 5:163): "Nathaniel Soule, for lying with an Indian woman, was centanced to be whipt att the post, which accordingly was inflicted; likewise, the woman was publickly whipt att the post for this fact. And the said Soule is ordered by the Court to paye ten bushells of Indian corne to the said Indian woman towards the keeping of the child."
George Soule (d. 1679), Mayflower: 9th great-grandfather
Depends on links A, C, D, E and F.
- Bradford lists him among Edward Winslow's household: "2 men servants, called Georg Sowle and Elias Story".
- He signed the Mayflower Compact on 11 Nov 1620 and later lived at Duxbury (Wikipedia).
Rev. Obadiah Holmes (c. 1607–1682), whipped in Boston for his faith: 10th great-grandfather
Depends on links A, C, D, E and F. His line runs through Sarah Slade.
- A glassmaker at Salem, then a Baptist preacher. Lea and Hutchinson (1909), p. 96: "In July, 1651, he … visited Lynn, Mass., on religious business, and were there arrested while he was preaching; they were sent to Boston, and there … were sentenced to be publicly whipped, which inhuman sentence was carried out in September following."
- His own account (Holmes 1915, p. 30): "I told the Magistrates, 'You have struck me as with Roses;' and said moreover, 'Although the Lord hath made it easie to me, yet I pray God it may not be laid to your charge.'"
- He was pastor of the First Baptist Church at Newport until his death.
Richard Borden (1596–1671) of Portsmouth, R.I.: 10th great-grandfather
Same dependencies as Obadiah Holmes.
- One of the earliest Rhode Island settlers, admitted a freeman 20 June 1638 (Holmes 1915, p. 79).
- His will provides "To daughter Sarah Holmes, £40, within six months after death of mother" (Weld 1899, p. 43).

5. Checked and ruled out
| Item | Why it is out |
|---|---|
| Rev. David Allee (1762–1835) and Charity Delila Bybee as parents of Sybil's husband | Unrelated. They are the parents of William Buford Allee of Barren Co., Ky., and Moniteau Co., Mo. (WikiTree Allee-23), who is not Walter Allee of Ohio. The 30 Mar 1797 and 25 Sep 1874 dates are his. |
| "William Buford Allee" as Albert's father | Disproven: Sybil's husband was Walter Allee (Wickham 1896, p. 48; 1850/1860 census index). |
| "Sir Francis Allee", knighted in the French wars; the Allee House at Bombay Hook | No evidence. A WikiTree contributor reports these claims of a descendant, Rev. G. Franklin Allee, and rejects them. |
| Huguenot Jean Allé of New Rochelle as Walter's ancestor | Unproven hypothesis (WikiTree); not a connection. |
| John Sawdy, 13, a confessed "witch" at Andover in 1692 | Called "a distant cousin" on WikiTree; no linking evidence. |
| Soule ancestry through Lucinda Sargent | No; the claim runs through Sybil Sawdy's mother. |
| Ridlon's 1763 marriage date for Jacob and Meribah | Arnold's Tiverton record gives 15 Oct 1766. |
| DAR Patriot Index birth of Jacob Soule, c. 1733 | Conflicts with GSMD and Throop (c. 1745). |
| Sarah Soule's death, 10 Aug 1801, Tiverton (the tree and the archive) | Contradicted by her father's 1807 will naming "Sarah Sawdey". |
| "Sarah Sawdy of Tiverton" m. William Wood, 28 Nov 1804 (Westport VR, p. 216) | Unidentified; not shown to be Sybil's mother. |
| Patience Warren (wife of Thomas Lucas, Sawdy side) as a Mayflower Warren | WikiTree gives a different father (John Warren); no Mayflower claim. |
| Emery D. Allee "1840–1951" as Albert's brother | A merge: Emery Delos Allee (1855–1951) was Albert's son. |
| Jean-Claude Van Damme and his son on Wikipedia's list of George Soule descendants | Not credible, unsourced; not used. |
| The Sawdy paternal side (Sherman, Thurston, Brownell, Manchester, Cooke; Philip Sherman of Portsmouth; a second Borden line) | Not tested. It depends on Silas being Sybil's father; wait for Fiske's article. |
# Patricia Hatten through Sarah Edith Allee: Allee, Sawdy, Soule, SargentResearch report, 8 October 2026. Read-only: nothing in the repository was changed. Ratings: proven / probable / possible / disproven.---## READ THIS FIRST: what everything below depends on**Every famous cousin and every notable ancestor above Sybil Sawdy depends on doubtful links.**1. **Sarah Edith Allee → Albert Allee (possible).** Only the Ancestry tree makes Sarah Edith(Mrs. Thomas J. Hatten) Albert's daughter. No record seen here names her as his child.Everything in this report hangs on this link, the bear-shooting Sybil included.2. **Sybil Sawdy → Sarah (Soule) Sawdy (possible).** Jacob Soule's 1807 will names a daughter"Sarah Sawdey". But no record seen names Sybil's parents. The Mayflower Society's ownfifth-and-sixth-generation volume marries Jacob's daughter Sarah to a **William** Sawdey(1789), not to Silas, and does not list a Sybil. The Soule claim, the Mayflower descent andevery cousin through Soule, Holmes and Borden depend on this link.3. **William⁴ Soule → Sylvanus³ Soule (probable).** The Society accepts it, but by inference:"it is likely that the children listed below are the children of Sylvanus Soule". All thefamous kin also depend on this link.**Safe from links 2 and 3 (but still dependent on link 1):** Sybil (Sawdy) Allee shooting the bear,Walter Allee, and Albert Allee's own story.**The archive's "William Buford Allee" is the wrong man.** Sybil Sawdy's husband was **WalterAllee** (c. 1796 – 1866, Lenox/Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., Ohio). The archive's dates (b. 30 Mar 1797,d. 25 Sep 1874, California, Moniteau Co., Missouri) and the parents "Rev. David Allee and CharityDelila Bybee" belong to a different man, William Buford Allee of Barren Co., Kentucky, and Missouri.That makes Rev. David Allee **Unrelated**.**The Soule claim runs through Sawdy, not Sargent.** It comes through Sybil Sawdy's mother.Lucinda Sargent's parents were not found.---## 1. Sarah Edith Allee → Albert E. Allee and Lucinda Sargent: **possible**- [C] Ancestry tree only (archive pages as imported). No record is attached.- [C] The places fit. Albert and Lucinda were in Illinois in the 1850s and 1860s; a family storyon WikiTree puts their daughter Elsie's birth (1865) on a homestead at Momence/Yellowhead,Kankakee Co., Illinois ([WikiTree Allee-401](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Allee-401)). Theywere in Todd Co., Minnesota, by the late 1860s; Fuller lists "Albert and Dan Allee" among thesettlers west of Long Prairie (below). Sarah's son Ralph Hatten was born at Red Wing, Minnesota,in 1872.- [C] WikiTree's Albert ([Allee-486](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Allee-486)) lists only onechild, Louis Eugene Allee (b. 10 Nov 1870, Long Prairie). Other children named in WikiTreestories are Emery Delos (1855–1951), Elsie Miranda (1865–1950) and a "Mrs. A. Partlow" ofSelah. **Sarah Edith is not named anywhere outside the Ancestry tree.**- **Conflicts with the archive:** the birthplace reads "Chicago, Cork, Illinois", a typo for Cook.- **What would settle it:**- the 1860 census of Albert's household (Kankakee Co., Ill.?) or the 1870 one (Minnesota);- the marriage of Thomas J. Hatten and Sarah Allee (Minnesota, c. 1871);- Sarah (Allee) Hatten's 1912 Cook County death record (her parents);- Ralph A. Hatten's 1934 Washington death certificate (his mother's maiden name).### Link B. Albert → Walter Allee and Sybil Sawdy (the archive says William Buford Allee): **probable**, and the archive's father is **disproven**Evidence that Sybil's husband was Walter:- [C, published reminiscence] Wickham, *Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve*(Cleveland, 1896), pt. 1, Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., p. 48([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/memorialtopionee0001gert)):> "Sybill Sawdy, who came to Jefferson from Springfield, Pa., at an early day, was the wife of> Walter Allee, who built the first house on the Bunnell farm. She has the distinction of being> the only woman in Jefferson who ever shot a bear."- [D, index cited on WikiTree, not seen here] FamilySearch indexes the household:- 1850, Lenox, Ashtabula, Ohio: Walter Allee, with "Cybil Allee"(ark 1:1:MXS5-ZZT and MXS5-ZZY);- 1860: Walter Allee, with Sybil (ark 1:1:MCP9-1T7 and MCP9-1TW);- 1840, Jefferson, Ohio: Walter Allee (ark 1:1:XHY8-7G3);- 1830, Hopewell, Ontario Co., N.Y.: "Walter Alley" (ark 1:1:XHG1-T8S).These are cited on [WikiTree Allee-401](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Allee-401) and[Sawdy-86](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sawdy-86). The archive's`census-1860-lenox-allee` is the same 1860 Lenox household (Roll M653_932, p. 115). The treeattached it to "William Buford Allee", but FamilySearch indexes the head as Walter.Evidence that Albert was their son:- [D, unseen family document] WikiTree describes a letter Walter wrote after Sybil died(2 Sep 1862) "to his sons Daniel and Albert … in Momence, Illinois".- [C] Fuller, *History of Morrison and Todd Counties, Minnesota* (1915), vol. 1, p. 225, names"Albert and Dan Allee" together among the settlers up the river west of Long Prairie([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/historyofmorriso01full)). Daniel (b. 1825, Scipio) ison the archive as Albert's brother.- [I] Albert's daughter Elsie **Miranda** echoes his sister Miranda.The man the archive has:- [C] [WikiTree Allee-23](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Allee-23): William (Buford) Allee,b. **30 Mar 1797, Barren Co., Kentucky**, d. **25 Sep 1874, California, Moniteau Co., Missouri**.These are exactly the archive's dates, but with a Kentucky birth. His wives were Anna Rowland(m. 24 Dec 1820, Barren Co., Ky.) and Nancy E. (Wood) Coffman (m. 1854, Moniteau Co.).- The GEDCOM's David Allee family also married in Franklin Co., Virginia (1786). This isthe Southern family the archive already set aside for the Missouri children. The tree mergedthe two men.**Conflicts with the archive:**- `william-allee-1797` should be **Walter Allee**:- born c. 1796, New York;- died 1866, Lenox/Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., Ohio;- buried East Lenox Cemetery (Find a Grave 97021734, as cited on WikiTree).- The "Scipio" birthplace has no support. Scipio is where Sybil lived and where her son Danielwas born.- Its father and mother ("David Allee", "Charity Delila Bybee") are **Unrelated** and shouldcome off.- Marriage: the archive has "c. 1819"; WikiTree has "about 1817/1818". No record seen.- **`emery-allee-1840` is a merge.** Emery **Delos** Allee (1855–1951) was **Albert's son**,Sarah Edith's brother. WikiTree cites his interview in the Duluth *News Tribune*, April 1950:"95 Today, He Recalls Raid by James Gang in Northfield". That settles the page's openquestion about a 111-year life. The 1840 Ohio birth belongs to no one known here.- WikiTree has a son **Benjamin Franklin** Allee (1835–1864, died a soldier in Dakota Territory).The archive has "Franklin Allee, c. 1831". It is probably the same man, but check.**Walter's own parents are unknown.**- [C, hypothesis] A WikiTree contributor suggests William Allee and Sarah of New Rochelle,descended from the Huguenot Jean Allé.- That is unproven: see §5.### Link C. Sybil Sawdy → Silas Sawdy (b. 1766) and Sarah: **possible**- [C] Wickham (above) gives her maiden name, Sawdy.- [C] WikiTree places her among the children of Silas Sawdy([Sawdy-16](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sawdy-16)):- David (1785);- Deborah (b. 11 Mar 1787; d. 1872, Springfield, Erie Co., Pa.);- Stephen (1790);- Henry (1791–1881, Oakfield, N.Y.);- Jabez (1794–1861);- **Sybil** (1796);- Clarissa (b. 1798, Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., N.Y.; d. 1837, Springfield, Pa.);- Jonathan (1800);- Sarah Ann (b. 1801, Cobleskill).- [C] Records of the cluster:- *The Nash Family* (1853), entry 1014-II: Alpheus Nash "m. 29 Sep. 1802, Deborah Sawdy ofHamilton" ([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/nashfamilyorreco00nash)).- *Biographical Review of Calhoun County, Michigan* (1904), pp. 105–106: Jabez Sawdy "was aresident of Erie, Pennsylvania, where he followed the carpenter's trade"([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/arx1021.0001.001.umich.edu)).- [I] Walter and Sybil moved about 1836 to Springfield, Erie Co., Pennsylvania, where theseSawdys lived. Sybil named a son **Silas** (1830). She was in Scipio, where Silas died in 1810,before she married.- **No record seen names Sybil's parents.**- **Conflicts with the archive:** the archive puts Silas's birth *and* death at Tiverton("1766 – 1810, Tiverton"). The GEDCOM and WikiTree have him dying at Scipio, Cayuga Co., N.Y.- **What would settle it:**- Jane Fletcher Fiske, "The Sawdy Family of Boston, Rhode Island, and Points West", *NEHGR*148 (April 1994): 141–160, and its continuation (WikiTree cites 148:156 and 148:268). This isthe authoritative account of Silas's family.- The 1800 census (Hamilton, then Chenango Co.) and the 1810 census (Scipio) for Silas Sawdy.Silas's own parents, for completeness:- [C] William Sawdy (1743–1793) and Sarah Sherman (1749–1793), per WikiTree.- [C] WikiTree says Benjamin Sawdy's will (Tiverton probate) names William's children, Silas amongthem.- This side (Sherman, Thurston, Brownell, Manchester, Cooke, and Borden again via Mary (Borden)Cooke) was **not tested** and is not used below.### Link D. Sybil's mother Sarah = Sarah Soule, daughter of Jacob Soule and Meribah Lewis: **possible**For the identification:- **[D, abstract] Jacob Soule's will**, dated 31 Jan 1807 and proved 5 June 1822 (Schoharie Co.,N.Y.), as abstracted in GSMD, *George Soule of the Mayflower and His Descendants in the Fifth andSixth Generations* (Plymouth, 2003)([archive.org, lending only; text read through full-text search](https://archive.org/details/georgesouleofmay2003soul)).It names:> "wife Meribah and son Lewis; sons Silas and Jacob jr.; daughters Phebe Sowle, Sarah Sawdey,> Rebecca and Betsey Simmons, Massah Frazee, Abigail Anthony, Nancy Rogers and Meribah Pooler;> son-in-law Eliphalet Frazee; son Lewis was executor"- [C] Ridlon, *Sole, Solly, Soule, Sowle, Soulis* (1926), vol. 2, p. 838, prints the legacy as"3. Sarah Sowle, wife of Gawdy, $5.00", which is evidently a misreading of Sawdy([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/contributiontohi02ridl)).- [I] The family moved into Schoharie County together. Ridlon says Jacob moved "about 1798-1800"to Blenheim, Schoharie Co. WikiTree has Silas Sawdy's daughters Clarissa (1798) and Sarah Ann(1801) born at Cobleskill, in the same county.Against, or unresolved:- **[C] The GSMD volume (2003)** gives Jacob's daughter as:> "i SARAH b. Tiverton RI ca 1768 [22]; d. Tiverton RI/PA? after 9 June 1793 [23]; m. Tiverton> RI 19 Jan 1789 William SAWDEY/Benjamin [24] ch: Susannah (ca 1789), Silas (ca 1790), Richard> (ca 1791), Henry (ca 1793 RI d 1880+ NY), Joseph (ca 1795), Peleg…"Its note [23] reads "bap. ca 9 June 1793 Sarah, wife of William SAWDEY [PBJ p. 291]", that is,Peleg Burroughs's journal.- [I] Two things suggest the GSMD compilers mixed up two couples:- Their child list matches the children of William Sawdy and **Sarah Sherman** named inBenjamin Sawdy's will (Silas, Henry, Joseph, Peleg, Susannah…).- WikiTree has Sarah (Sherman) Sawdy dying 16 June 1793, a week after the June 1793 baptism of"Sarah, wife of William Sawdey".But the GSMD's footnote [24], the record of the 19 Jan 1789 marriage, was not reached. TheAncestry tree has Silas Sawdy marrying Sarah Soule on 19 **Feb** 1789 at Tiverton. That isnearly the same date, which suggests a single record read two ways.- [D, transcript] Arnold's *Vital Record of Rhode Island*, vol. 4, Tiverton, has no Sawdy–Sowlemarriage ([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/cu31924098819976)). Silas Sawdy is not ahead of household in the 1790 Rhode Island census([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/headsoffamiliesari00unit)).- [D, transcript] *Vital Records of Westport, Mass.*, p. 216: "SAWDY, Sarah of Tiverton andWilliam Wood, Nov. 28, 1804" ([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/cu31924028839821)).This is an unidentified Sarah Sawdy. She could fit the GSMD's William Sawdey scenario; shecannot be Silas's wife if Silas lived to 1810.**Conflicts with the archive:**- Sarah Soule's death, "10 Aug 1801, Tiverton", conflicts with three things:- her father's 1807 will naming her;- Sarah Ann's 1801 birth at Cobleskill;- the tree's own attachment of the 1810 Scipio census (roll 31, p. 1234) to her.- GSMD estimates her birth at c. 1768 (the archive has 1767).**What would settle it:**- Fiske, *NEHGR* 148, on Silas's wife;- the 1789 Tiverton marriage record (the GSMD's source [24]), probably Tiverton town records orPeleg Burroughs's journal (ed. R. W. Sherman, 1981);- the original Schoharie County will file of Jacob Soule.### Link E. Jacob Soule → William⁴ Soule (mother Keziah Gifford, or Jemima Baker): **probable**- [D, transcript] Arnold, *VR RI* 4, Tiverton Intentions and Marriages, p. 49 (Tiverton record2-53):> "Jacob, of Tiverton, and Meribah Lewis, of Barnstable; m. by Joseph Stafford, Justice,> Oct. 15, 1766."Ridlon's "Oct. 15, 1763" is wrong.- [C] Louise Walsh Throop, the GSMD researcher for the Soule silver books, "The Descendants ofGranny Sowle, widow of William Soule/Sowle", *Mayflower Quarterly* 86:3 (Fall 2019), pp. 38–39([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/mayflower-quarterly-vol-86-no-3-fall-2019)):> "Granny Sowle was Keziah (Gifford) Sowle, apparently widowed in 1778, and the second wife of> William⁴ Soule (Sylvanus³, Nathaniel², George¹)…"Her list of children opens "1. Jacob⁵ Soule, b. ca1745, m. Tiverton 1766, Meribah Lewis" andincludes "7. Job Soule, b. 27 August 1757".- [C] Ridlon 2:838: "Jacob Soule (1), son of William (1) and Jemima (Baker) Soule … He alsomentions his brother, Job Soule, the miller of Tiverton." The brother named in the will tiesJacob to William's family.- [C] GSMD, *George Soule … for Four Generations* (2006 ed.), family of William⁴([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/georgesouleofmay2006soul)): he married- (1) at Swansea, 20 Sept 1733, JEMIMA BAKER, b. 1714, d. Tiverton ca. 1737;- (2) "prob. ca. 1744 (before 24 April 1747)", KEZIAH GIFFORD, b. Dartmouth 27 Feb 1720.His estate inventory is dated 6 Sept 1778.- If Jacob was born c. 1745, he was Keziah's son (Throop). Ridlon's Jemima is less likely.- **Conflicts:**- the archive/tree have Jacob born 1743;- the DAR Patriot Index has him "b c 1733 RI d 6-5-1822 NY m Meribah Lewis Ens RI". Itsdeath date equals the probate date in Ridlon.### Link F. William⁴ → Sylvanus³ Soule and Sarah Slade: **probable** (inferred by GSMD)- [C/I] GSMD four generations (2006):> "it is likely that the children listed below are the children of Sylvanus Soule. Sylvanus> Soule lived in Tiverton by 1729 and William Soule (Family #120) was in Tiverton by 1730. Sylvanus³ → Nathaniel² Soule: **proven**- [D, abstract] GSMD (2006): "On 4 May 1708 Nathaniel, Sylvanus and Jacob Soul sons of NathanielSoul late of Dartmouth…" (a Bristol Co. deed).- Nathaniel's wife was Rose; her surname is given variously as Thorne or Hallett. It isunresolved and does not affect the line.### Link H. Sarah Slade (wife of Sylvanus) → William Slade and Sarah Holmes: **proven**- [D, abstract] GSMD (2006): Sylvanus "m. prob. Among them:> "VI. It citesFind a Grave 24511794 (Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie).- Nothing was found in the archive.org full text, Chronicling America or web searches.- She was born 9 Dec 1829, Fountain Co., Indiana (the county was organised in 1826).- **Leads:**- Sargent households in Fountain Co., 1830 census;- Albert and Lucinda's marriage, probably in Illinois c. 1853 (Illinois Statewide MarriageIndex; the site refused connections from here);- the 1880 census of Lucinda, which gives her parents' birthplaces.- No Soule or Mayflower claim runs through her.---## 2. Notable-ancestor material### Sybil (Sawdy) Allee (1796–1862), the woman who shot a bear: 3rd great-grandmotherDepends on links A and B.- Born in New York in 1796. She married Walter Allee about 1817–19.- They lived in Cayuga and Ontario counties, New York; then about 1836 in Springfield, Erie Co.,Pennsylvania; then from about 1838 in Jefferson and Lenox, Ashtabula Co., Ohio.- Ninety-four years after their move, the women of the Western Reserve remembered her:> "Sybill Sawdy, who came to Jefferson from Springfield, Pa., at an early day, was the wife of> Walter Allee, who built the first house on the Bunnell farm. She has the distinction of being> the only woman in Jefferson who ever shot a bear.">> Wickham, *Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve* (1896), pt. 1, p. 48> ([archive.org](https://archive.org/details/memorialtopionee0001gert)).- She and Walter both caught typhoid in September 1862; she died on 2 September.- Walter wrote to their sons Daniel and Albert, then soldiers at Momence, Illinois. WikiTree transcribes the *Yakima Valley Optimist*(1921). The newspaper was **not seen**, so treat this as secondhand:> "Mr. Allee enjoyed the trip in fine form despite the fact that he decided the price asked for> a sleeper from his home town to Yakima was entirely too much and he occupied the day coach the> entire distance. Mr. Allee though 95 his next birthday has more the appearance of a man 65 and> is a member of the GAR…"- Close-family story: his son Emery Delos Allee (1855–1951), Sarah Edith's brother, told theDuluth *News Tribune* in April 1950 that he was in Northfield during the James–Younger raid of1876 and was deputised to guard the body of the outlaw Bill Stiles (WikiTree; not seen).### Jacob Soule (c. 1745–1822), whaler and Revolutionary ensign: 5th great-grandfatherDepends on links A, C and D.- Ridlon 2:838:> "He was for many years a seaman, sailed to the far North engaged in the whale fishery and> endured many hardships, from the rigors of the climate and the strenuous life.
