The index gives 12 Sept 1862, when Harriet was 14; the 1900 census (married 35 years) points to 1865. The certificate image (Columbia Co. no. 02652) would settle it.

Born in Nova Scotia in 1841 and taken to Wisconsin at four, when his parents settled at Calamus, Dodge County, in 1845. His younger brother Malcolm was wounded at Shiloh and died in May 1862. He married Harriet Ellen Adams at Fall River, Columbia County, and the family moved between Iowa and Wisconsin (Calamus again in 1870) before settling in Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, where in 1880 he was "Farming & Teaching" (record). Alfred was born at Park Rapids, Minnesota, in 1884; Frank in Washington Territory in 1887. At Tacoma from the 1890s with nine children, all living in 1900 (record); died there in 1927.

Open questions

  • The year of the marriage (1862 or 1865); what he did in Tacoma; his obituary.
  • Whether he is the William McMillan who in 1911 asked to be guardian of his grandchildren Barbara, Irene and Frankie McMillan.
