Of Yarmouth; brother of Jeremiah Howes. His father's will (1665) charged him with having his nephew Samuel taught the cooper's trade. "He is often mentioned in the records with the prefix of Capt." (Freeman, History of Cape Cod 2:194n).
King Philip's War. He led Yarmouth's men to the war more than once. The town's list of its men, as Freeman prints it from the town record, has "Third Expedition, one month's service: Capt. Thomas Howes, Sergt. Sam. Hall, ..." and "Fifth Expedition: Capt. Howes and 21 men" (HCC 2:193n). Long afterwards, in 1742, Ebenezer Goodspeed of Barnstable, claiming a share of the Narragansett lands, deposed that he had been "a soldier in the Narragansett wars so-called, under Capt. Thomas Howes" (Soldiers in King Philip's War, p. 441).
On 15 Jan 1675/6, it seems between expeditions, he made his will, providing for "my Mother Prence." That spring he was rated for the war at Yarmouth with his brother Jeremiah and his mother, "Mrs. Prence" (HCC 2:194-195), and at the June 1676 court he was approved as one of Yarmouth's selectmen, "Mr Edmond Hawes, Capt Howes, Ensigne Thacher" (Records of the Colony of New Plymouth 5:195). He died that November (HCC 2:194n).
On 8 May 1684 his youngest son Jonathan chose "his vnkell, Mr Jeremiah Howes, to be his gaurdian" (PCR 6:134).
