note
"Mary, w. James, Apr. 11, 1724" (2:619). Taken to be the wife of James Lord Sr., who filed an intention to marry again eleven months later.

Wife of James Lord Sr. (1676/7-1734) of Ipswich and probably the mother of James Lord Jr., the father of Lucy (Lord) Low. Her maiden name is not known.

James Jr.'s birth is recorded as "James, s. James and Mary, Apr. 12, 1707" (Ipswich VR 1:244). The same register has "Mary, d. James and Mary, Apr. 17, 1709," "Joseph, s. James and Mary, bp. 23 : 7 m: 1716," and "Ebenezer, s. James and Mary, bp. Mar. 29, 1724," less than two weeks before her death; these are probably her children too. Her widower filed an intention to marry Susannah Waite on 27 Mar 1725 (Ipswich VR).

Open questions

  • Her maiden name. A 2025 Historic Ipswich article by Gordon Harris says "James Lord (1676 - 1734) married Mary (Haskell) Lord." It gives no source, and no marriage of a James Lord to a Haskell is in the Ipswich VR, so the Haskell name is unproven.
  • When and where she married James Lord.
