note
"Henery CHURCHILL married Mary DOTY widow 8 Feb. 1687/88" (MD 13:204). Henry was not a son of John Churchill (Merrick).

Sister of Sgt. John Churchill Jr. and of Eleazer Churchill, so an aunt of both Churchill women in Nancy Ellis's ancestry. In 1671/2 she was fined £6 "for comitting fornication, as shee saith, with Thomas Doten," and sued him because "Thomas Doten, haueing begotten her with child, is departed the gou'ment"; her brother Joseph and brother-in-law John Drew stood bond (PCR 5:83, 94). She married Thomas Doty, and as his widow married Henry Churchill in 1687/8; she was living in 1722 as "widow of Henry Churchill of Plimton." That 1687/8 marriage is the source of the mistaken "Mary Doty" wife of Eleazer Churchill in The Churchill Family in America and Mollie's typescript.

That the widow of 1678 was this Mary Churchill is Merrick's reading (TAG 71, 1996); Barclay (TAG 36, 1960) thought Thomas Doty married two women named Mary.
