- Probably the Elenor wife of John Holbrooke buried there 28 July 1558.
Eldest son of Thomas Holbrooke of Norton Malreward, and probably a child of his first wife (Davis 1945). Left 6s. 8d. by Nicholas Derell of Marksbury (1546) and a cow by Alice Derell (1551/2), as one of the "children of my son-in-law Thomas Holbroke." His father's will (1571/2) left him yokes, ropes and gear for his oxen and made him an overseer.
Children of a John Holbrooke were baptised at Norton Malreward from 1558 to 1581: Thomas, John, Johan, John, Thomas, Arthur, Alexander (or Ales), Elenor, Judith, Sara, Ursula and Susane. That they are his is inferred. A John Holbroke was executor of Richard Gage, the Derells' kinsman, about 1556 (Jekett v Holbroke), and a John Holbroke of Norton Malreward took a fine of Norton Hawkfield farm in 1581; both are very probably him.
Open questions
- Was he the John Holbrooke buried at Norton Malreward on 30 June 1608, and so the "John Holbrooke my brother deceased" of Robert's will (1616/17)?
- Davis suggests Nicholas Holbrooke of Compton Dando (d. 1639) was his son.
